Notes from the ConTech Roadshow

In April, I attended the ConTech Roadshow at Georgia Tech in Atlanta. It was a well run, well attended conference put on by JB Knowledge. It was good to see a number of students from Georgia Tech and other schools taking in the conference and interacting with the trade show.

I particularly enjoyed the presentation by Josh Bone (DeWALT) and James Benham (The ConTechCrew), “BIM and Beyond.” After breaking down the definitions of BIM (Building Information Modeling) and VDC (Virtual Design and Construction), they started out with a great insight: “We’ll figure it out in the field”…is changing to… “We’ll figure it out in the computer.”

I am relatively new to the BIM world, and I appreciated the way Josh defined “Big BIM” and “Little BIM.” The core of his message was that there is a lot of coordination on all construction projects, and each one will have its own “right” amount of BIM. If 80% of the risk of a project comes from 20% of the project, then focus the BIM process on what will be the big impact. The numbers Josh used to reiterate the ROI from using BIM were very impactful and should get attention from all levels of management.

eVolve MEP did get a shout out in Josh’s presentation on the mechanical slides, and we were pleased that eVolve MEP is a part of the competitive landscape that he presented. The final numbers that blew me away in the BIM presentation were the project savings of nearly $9M on a $100M project. I am sure that Josh or James would share their numbers and presentation with you if it would help you in your push for better BIM implementations.

The eVolve experts would also be delighted to demonstrate the eVolve Mechanical or eVolve Electrical solutions to show you how to reduce rework and gain efficiencies in Revit with the eVolve MEP plugins. The Contech Roadshow is headed to Denver in June, and eVolve MEP will be represented there. Be sure to look us up if you will be attending. Achieving a competitive edge in fabrication and pre-fabrication will be the focus during the upcoming MEP Force conference in late August in San Antonio. MEP Force is an exclusive conference for industry leaders to unite and learn from other industry experts. Use this link to learn more about MEP Force and to register.
